“What if we’re wrong? The impact of uncertainty in predictive systems”

Imagine forecasting an extreme storm and it turns out to be just a windy afternoon. What are the consequences? And how should systems (and humans) respond?

Dr Jan Verkade will dive into how predictive uncertainty plays a vital role in operational forecasting and decision-making. As a hydrometeorologist at Deltares and Rijkswaterstaat, Jan has worked on flood forecasting and early warning systems in over 15 countries, with expertise ranging from technical verification models to institutional development.

About Jan Verkade
Jan has a PhD in Hydraulic Engineering & Flood Risk Management and over 25 years of international experience. He currently serves in the Dutch national river forecasting service and is an active participant in the Good Judgment Open forecasting tournament.
